UnionPay Wallet

As the world’s largest issuer of credit and debit cards, UnionPay is a major Chinese financial services provider. Collaborating with their digital innovation team at the Shanghai headquarters, we embarked on a mission to assist UnionPay in building their own mobile payments platform.

China is leading the race to become the world’s first cashless economy, with four out of five payments processed by major digital platforms. As a major financial brand, UnionPay sought to enter the market with its own platform, competing with Alipay and WeChat Wallet.

Linking a UnionPay card allows the user to make payments at POS terminals and handle transactions online or offline. The app also provides debit balance management, credit card payment scheduling, and utility or transport payments—all with a single tap.

The deals feature is central to the UnionPay Wallet experience and aims to grow its user base. Enabled by UnionPay’s broad partnership network, the deals tab lets users find special offers and discounts both nearby and online.

UnionPay’s ambition to launch the app in various markets presented a key challenge. From day one, we had to design with internationalization in mind to ensure compatibility with different languages and writing systems.

Unlike other payment solutions that need dedicated POS terminals, UnionPay Wallet includes an integrated merchant portal. This allows business owners to process payments directly through the app, making it especially useful for smaller merchants and vendors.

We partnered with UnionPay to realize their digital vision. The UnionPay Wallet is a digital payments platform with scalability at its core, supported by a flexible design system for seamless partner integrations.
